Picture light being held back a little, so one area goes a step darker than the one beside it. On paper that step is what makes a circle into a ball. Follow the same idea outward and you get the other uses: many small steps between dark and light become many small differences between things that are nearly alike, and the thing standing between you and the sun - leaves, cloth, a roof - is what holds the light back in the first place.
可以想成光被擋掉一點點，讓某一塊比旁邊暗了一階。在紙上，這一階就是讓圓變成球的關鍵。順著同一個想法往外走，其他用法就跟著出現了。暗到亮之間有很多階，這些階搬到抽象的東西上，就成了「幾乎一樣的東西之間那一點差別」。而一開始把光擋下來的那樣東西——樹葉、布、屋頂——在比較舊的英文裡也可以叫 shading。
