A robber is someone who steals money or property, especially by using force or the fear of force — a bank robber, someone who stops you and takes a bag. books often stop at a person who steals. Though actually, many speakers keep robber for the open, threatening kind of stealing (robbery), and use thief for stealing in general, including quiet stealing. A is usually called a thief, not a robber. The word is ordinary news English, not slang. There is also robber baron, an old insult for a very rich, businessman — a stretch of the same idea.
