Picture someone who keeps a practice. The hour comes round, and they do the thing — the same way, with the same care, whether or not they feel like it, whether or not anyone is watching. One half of this word simply points at that world and says: we are talking about religion here. The other half keeps only the manner and throws the belief away, so that watering the plants, backing up the files or brushing your teeth can be done with exactly that steadiness.
