Taking something private and putting it where everybody can see it. Picture a manuscript that has sat in a drawer: it goes to the printer, comes back as boxes of books, and the boxes go out to the shops. That release — the moment it stops being yours and becomes everyone's to read — is publication. The thing that comes out the other end also takes the name.
