From the word’s history
Magazine entered English in the 1580s meaning a storehouse, especially for arms and ammunition, borrowed via French magasin and Italian magazzino from Arabic makhzan 'storehouse' (root khazana 'to store up'). The periodical sense came later, in 1731, when an editor called his monthly collection a 'magazine' by analogy with a military storehouse — 'a monthly collection, to treasure up as in a magazine'. So the storehouse is literally the root, and every modern sense is a kind of store.
