Picture something moving forward step by step, never jumping — a line that keeps going a little further each time. Point that forward movement at society and you get someone pushing for change; point it at an illness or a tax rate and you get something that grows stage by stage; point it at a verb and you get an action still on its way, not finished.

可以想成：一件事一步一步往前推，不是一次跳到位，而是每次都再往前一點。把這個「往前推」的畫面對準社會，就是想改革、要往更好的方向走；對準疾病或稅率，就是一階一階慢慢加重；對準動詞，就是動作還在路上、還沒收尾。progressive 的幾個意思看起來差很遠，其實都在講同一件事：往前，而且是逐步地往前。
