You can picture a closed door. Whatever happens on this side of it does not cross to the other side: no extra eyes, no extra ears, no public record. From that one door you get everything — talking to someone alone, keeping a thought inside your own head, agreeing to something off the record, and something being owned by particular people rather than by everyone through the government.
