    If you read, say, laugh, or cry aloud, you do it so that the sound comes out and other people can hear it, instead of staying silent or only inside your head.

    「aloud」講的是「有沒有發出聲音」，不是「聲音多大」。read／say／laugh／groan 這些動詞後面加 aloud，就是把本來留在心裡或留在紙上的東西變成別人聽得到的聲音，例如 read the poem aloud 就是中文的「朗讀」。跟 loudly 的差別就在這裡：loudly 在講音量大不大，aloud 只在乎聽不聽得到——老師說 read it aloud，是要你唸出聲，不是要你用喊的。可以想成：開頭的 a- 就像 asleep、awake、alive 裡的 a-，是在說「處在某個狀態」，aloud 就像「處在出得了聲的狀態」。
