One way to picture pretence: a painted screen stood up in front of what is really there. People look at the screen and believe it. Someone has to hold it up, so it can be kept up, and it can be dropped. The whole word is about the screen, never about what the person behind it feels.
可以想成：真實的情況前面，被人擺了一塊畫好的布景。別人看到的是布景，就相信了。布景要有人撐著，所以英文說 keep up the pretence；撐不住了就 drop the pretence，布景掉下來，後面的東西就露出來。要注意的是，這個字講的一直是那塊布景本身——是那個被演出來的樣子，不是演的人心裡在想什麼。有時候布景只是隨手擺的一小塊（假裝在綁鞋帶），有時候是整套精心搭好的（an elaborate pretence）。
