You can picture practising as the word that separates the label from the doing. Two people may both be called Catholic; two people may both hold a medical degree. Only one of them actually goes to Mass on Sunday, or actually sees patients this month. Practising points at that second person — the one who is currently, really carrying the thing out. It sits in front of a noun (a practising Catholic, a practising lawyer) and is not used on its own after the verb be.

可以想成 practising 是把「掛名的」和「真的在做的」分開的一個字：兩個人都可以說自己是天主教徒，也都可能拿著醫師執照，但只有其中一個真的每個星期天上教堂、這個月真的在看診。practising 指的就是後面那個人——此刻正在實際履行、實際執行的那一位。它只放在名詞前面（a practising Catholic、a practising lawyer），不會單獨擺在 be 後面當補語。
