    pessimistic 說的是「往前看的時候，先看到壞的那一邊」——不是現在心情不好，而是覺得「以後會很糟」「這件事不會有好結果」。它的相反詞是 optimistic（樂觀的）。這個字可以形容人（He is pessimistic.），也可以形容說法或看法（a pessimistic view / a pessimistic report）。pessimistic、pessimist、pessimism 這一家人可以想成從同一個習慣長出來：pessimism 是「先想到壞結果」的習慣，pessimist 是有這種習慣的人，pessimistic 就是這個習慣顯現在人身上或話語裡的樣子。後面要接內容時用 pessimistic about（悲觀看待某事）或 pessimistic that（悲觀地認為…會怎樣）。
