Wiktionary's etymology 2 traces this pelt to Late Middle English pelt/pelte, probably a variant of pilten (to push, thrust, strike), possibly going back to Latin pultāre (to beat, knock, strike), the frequentative of pellere (to drive, push, hurl). A frequentative verb means repeated action, which fits the one-after-another picture.

Wiktionary's etymology 1 gives Middle English pelt (the skin of a sheep), possibly through Anglo-Norman pelette and Old French pel, from Latin pellis (animal skin, hide, leather, a garment made of animal skin). The same root shows up in pelisse, a fur coat.
