You can picture fur as the thick soft coat growing all over an animal — a cat, a rabbit, a fox — a warm layer that covers the whole body and that your hand sinks into when you stroke it. Almost everything else the word does comes from following that layer: taking it off the animal and using it, copying it, or noticing something else that quietly grows a coat like it.
