A peasant was a poor farmer who worked a small piece of land, especially in past centuries in Europe or Asia, often without owning the land themselves. Today the word is mostly used to talk about history, or about poor farmers in other countries. Be careful: calling a modern person a "peasant" as an insult, meaning unrefined or low-class, is rude - it isn't a neutral, polite word to use about people now.
