Ground that people have covered over to make it hard and flat — stone, brick, concrete, or asphalt laid down so that feet and wheels have a firm surface instead of mud.

可以想成一片本來是泥土的地，被人鋪上石板、磚頭、水泥或柏油，變得又硬又平，踩上去不會陷、下雨也不會爛成泥。pavement 就是這層「鋪好的硬地面」；至於那片硬地面是給人走的、給車開的，還是庭院的地板，要看講的人在哪裡、在講哪一塊。英式和美式各自把這個字往不同方向收窄，是這個詞最容易讓學習者誤會的地方。
