Picture the ground itself as the road. Nobody has poured stone or asphalt over it; wheels and feet have simply pressed the earth flat, over and over, until a way appeared. That is the whole word. Everything that follows from it follows from the surface: dust behind you when it is dry, mud under you when it rains, and wheels that never quite hold.
