A useful picture: the body's nerves — thin threads running from the brain out to every finger and toe, carrying messages. Everything this word means sits on those threads. When they are simply the physical wiring, you get the medical sense. When they are pictured as pulled tight and quivering, you get the everyday feeling of being on edge.
