Hold it up to the window and light comes through in little dots: small round holes, chewed quietly by insects while nobody was looking. Nothing was broken and nothing was torn. Time and small mouths simply took the material away, bit by bit. That picture — something eaten hollow by being left alone too long — is what every use of moth-eaten carries.
