One way to hold this word: something small standing in for something big. On a table there is a ship the length of your arm, with the same masts and the same shape as a ship you could not fit in a room. It is not the ship, and everyone knows that. Its whole job is to let you look at the ship, turn it round, and see how it is put together. Add -ing and you get the work of making or being that stand-in.
