You can think of merchandising as the moment where goods are put in front of a buyer. Someone decides what stands by the door, what sits on the shelf at eye level, what the sign over it says. That is the activity the word names. And because that activity produces a whole class of objects — things made only so they can be put in front of a fan — the same word came to cover those objects too.

The word is merchandise plus -ing, the ending that turns a verb into a noun for the activity. Late Middle English marchaundising named trading itself; the modern senses are that activity narrowed to the shop floor, and then the goods it produces.
