Picture a pair of hands going into something that belongs to someone else — a drawer, a toolbox, a pot that another person is stirring. The hands are not welcome, and they are not careful. That is the whole word. Sometimes the thing being handled is real, and sometimes it is a situation, a plan or a country's business; the feeling is the same either way, and it is always a complaint.

Wiktionary traces meddle through Anglo-Norman medler to Latin misceo, 'to mix'. Mixing is close to the hands-in-the-pot picture, and it also explains an old, now dead use of meddle that simply meant 'to blend things together'.

根據 Wiktionary，meddle 經由盎格魯諾曼語 medler 來自拉丁文 misceō「混合」。「混合」跟「把手伸進別人那鍋裡攪」的畫面很接近，也解釋了為什麼英文早期真的有 meddle＝混合 的舊用法（現已不用，本頁未收）。
