Picture something long and thin coming down hard, then coming down again, and again. That is the whole picture: not one push but a stroke repeated until it has done its work. When a person is on the receiving end, it is a punishment. When a roof or a small boat is on the receiving end, it is the storm. The word never tells you the thing is strong; it tells you the hitting keeps happening.

The packet records only that lashing is lash plus the ending -ing. That ending turns the striking into a thing you can name and count, which is why a repeated action can become a punishment you can be sentenced to, or a beating a coastline can take.

A rope goes over a load, round a pole, back again, and is pulled until nothing can shift. That is the picture here: not a blow, but a tie that takes the movement out of things. The rope is named after the job it is doing, which is why you can check it, tighten it, cut it, and why it is usually spoken of in the plural — one rope alone rarely holds anything down.
