The act of hitting something or someone hard many times, and the damage left by that repeated hitting.
連續重擊；毆打
Picture blow after blow landing on the same spot. Not one big hit, but many, until the thing being hit is worn down: a sea wall under the all night, a shed in a typhoon. Both meanings of battering sit inside that picture. One keeps the blows real. The other moves the same picture onto things you cannot touch, so a reputation or a small shop is worn down by one piece of bad news after another.
「battering」可以想成同一個地方被打了一下、又一下。重點不在單獨那一擊有多重，而在它停不下來。海浪整夜拍著堤防、颱風打了一整晚的工具間，就是這個畫面。這個字的兩個意思都住在這個畫面裡。一個維持在真的挨打。另一個像是把同一個畫面搬到摸不到的東西上：名聲、生意、信心，也會被一次又一次的壞消息打到撐不住。
