Hold one picture: not a single blow, but blow after blow after blow. Every use of this word needs that repeating. Stand next to it and you hear it, which is the banging at the door and the noise from upstairs. Look at what the blows are doing and you see the work — metal going thinner and harder under the hammer. Step back and look at what is left afterwards, and the same beating becomes a result: a team, a shop or a roof that has been pounded until there is nothing much left of it.
