Think of a hand closed around something, holding it steady so that it stays as it is. That is the noun made from keep. One way to see the word: what is held stays where it belongs — and a thing that is where it belongs also fits what is around it. So the same picture covers both being looked after by someone, and matching the things beside it.

「keeping」可以想成一隻手把東西握著、守著，讓它維持原來的樣子。這是動詞 keep 變成名詞之後留下的畫面。從這裡可以分出兩條線：東西被誰握在手上，就是由誰照顧；而東西待在該待的位置上，看起來就跟周圍對得起來。所以同一個畫面，一邊講「誰在保管」，一邊講「合不合得上」。要提醒的是，這個名詞幾乎不單獨出現，它總是活在 in keeping with、out of keeping with、in somebody's keeping 這幾個固定說法裡。
