You can picture an ingredient as one of the things that went into the bowl: on its own it is just flour, or an egg, but once everything is mixed you cannot see it any more — you only taste the result. The word always looks at a finished whole and names one of the parts that had to go in to make it.
可以想成 ingredient 是「當初丟進碗裡的其中一樣」：單獨看只是麵粉、一顆蛋，可是攪一攪之後你就看不到它了，只嚐得到成品。這個字永遠是站在成品這邊往回看，指出「要做成這個，這一樣非放不可」。
