Think of something that has an empty middle: a bun before it is closed, a tooth with a hole in it, an empty pillow cover, a crack in a wall. Someone puts material into that space, and the space stops being empty. The word 'filling' names that material — the stuff on the inside. It never tells you what the material is; it tells you where it is and what job it is doing. When the same idea turns into an adjective, the empty space becomes your stomach: filling food is food that fills you up.
