A cavity is a hole or empty space inside something. The core idea is a hollow sitting inside a solid thing. Doctors talk about the nasal cavity (the space inside the nose) and other body cavities. Dentists use it for a hole in a tooth caused by decay — that is often the first meaning students meet. Scientists and builders use it for a hollow inside a material, a wall, or a machine. It is a fairly neutral, slightly technical word: in casual talk about teeth, people also just say a hole in my tooth.
