That physical mark — the trace one thing leaves when it presses onto another — is the seed of the whole word. Everything else is that same act of pressing, just moved onto the mind, onto paper, or onto an audience.

From Latin 'imprimere' (im- 'into, on' + premere 'to press'), literally 'to press into' — the same pressing-a-mark picture that anchors the modern word.
