You can think of it as the way someone acts when waiting has become unbearable — the body will not sit still: tapping, sighing, at the clock, pushing against the delay.
一個人再也等不下去的樣子。時間還沒到、事情還沒發生，但這個人的身體已經先動了起來——手指在桌上敲、腳一直抖、頭一直轉去看門口、嘴裡發出一聲嘆氣。impatient 的字面是「不能忍受」，加上 -ly 就變成「用那種忍不住的方式去做某件事」。關鍵在於：這個字描述的不是心裡想什麼，而是別人從外面看得到的樣子——語氣、動作、表情把那份等不下去洩漏出來。至於這份等不下去是往負面走（被拖到火大）還是往正面走（期待到坐不住），就要看等的是什麼；動作幾乎一模一樣，情緒卻是兩個方向。
