One way to hold graduated is to picture a flight of steps rather than a ramp. Someone has already cut the whole thing into levels, and the levels sit in order: this much, then a bit more, then a bit more again. A tax table is that staircase written in money. The side of a measuring is the same staircase printed in lines. And a person who has climbed every step of a course to the top is graduated too.

graduated 可以想成一道「階梯」，而不是一道斜坡。有人事先把整件事切成一層一層，而且照順序排好：這麼多，再多一點，再多一點。稅率表就是用錢畫出來的階梯。量筒側邊那排刻度線，是同一道階梯印在玻璃上。而一個人把課程的每一階都爬完、爬到頂，也可以說是 graduated。
