From the word’s history
Goodbye began as the phrase 'God be with ye' (late 14c.), which wore down in the 1500s through spellings like godbwye and God b'uy. By the 1590s it had settled as good-bye, the first part reshaped by the other parting phrases good day and good evening — which is why a blessing ended up looking like the word good.
goodbye 原本是一整句話 God be with ye（願上帝與你同在，十四世紀末），十六世紀被口語磨短，出現過 godbwye、God b'uy 這些寫法；到 1590 年代定型成 good-bye，前半段被 good day、good evening 這些道別語帶著改成了 good。所以今天看起來像「好」的那個字，其實是從一句祝福磨出來的。
