Hold a sheet of glass in your mind: flat, hard, bright, and holding a reflection you can look into. Every use of glassy borrows something from that sheet. Water borrows the flatness and the reflection. Eyes borrow the shine with nothing behind it. Buildings stop borrowing and just use the glass itself.

glassy is glass plus -y ('like ...'), recorded in Middle English as glasy; Dutch glazig and German glasig are built the same way.
