You can picture a knight whose lance is not sworn to any one lord. He owns his weapon, and he takes his skill from one battle to the next, paid job by job. A freelance worker carries their own tools and skill the same way: no single employer owns them, and the work arrives one contract at a time.

From the word’s history

Sir Walter Scott seems to have coined 'free-lance' in Ivanhoe (1820) for a medieval mercenary — free = bound to no lord, lance = his spear. The figurative use starts in 1864, and by 1882 it was being used of journalists.

「free-lance」據考是 Walter Scott 在小說《撒克遜英雄傳》（Ivanhoe, 1820）裡造出來的，指中世紀的傭兵：free 是「不隸屬任何領主」，lance 是他手上的長矛。1864 年開始有比喻用法，1882 年拿來講記者，才慢慢變成今天「自由接案」的意思。
