Music that ordinary people in one place have sung and played for a very long time. Nobody owns it, and it is usually learned by ear from older singers rather than from written music.

You can think of folk music as a song with no owner. It sits in a village, not on a shelf: someone's grandmother sings it, a child hears it and sings it later, and nobody ever asks who wrote it. Everything else the words mean grows out of that picture — including the modern style, which is new music made to sound like it came from that village.
folk music 的核心畫面可以想成：一首沒有主人的歌。它放在村子裡，不是放在架子上——阿嬤唱給孩子聽，孩子長大以後也會唱，沒有人問過這首歌是誰寫的。另一個意思就從這幅畫面長出來：現代有人寫新歌，但是刻意做成「像是從那個村子來的」聲音。
