One way to hold finished: a piece of work has run all the way to its end, and there is no more road. Standing at that end can feel like two very different things. For the person doing the work it means the load is off: I am finished. For the thing being made it means it has arrived in its proper shape: the finished product. And when the road that ran out was someone's chances rather than their work, the same end point turns sour: we are finished. Where the word sits in the sentence is the clue — in front of a noun it is about the thing, after be it is about the person.
