From Old French faute / Latin fallere ‘to deceive, fail, fall short’ — the same root as ‘fail’ and ‘false’; a fault is literally a place where something has fallen short.

源自古法語 faute、拉丁文 fallere（欺騙、失敗、不足），和 fail（失敗）、false（假的）同源。所以 fault 骨子裡就是「某處沒撐住、落了空」的那個點。
