From French évaluer: é- "out" + value, and value traces to Latin valere "be worth, be strong." To evaluate is literally to draw out the worth of something — still the core move today.

evaluation 來自法文 évaluer，é-（向外）＋ value（價值），而 value 的字根是拉丁文 valere「有價值、強而有力」。所以 evaluate 字面上就是「把一件事的價值抽出來、算出來」——今天講 evaluation，核心動作仍是「替某樣東西定出它值多少」。
