Picture something already committed — spoken for, taken, in use — so that it cannot be given to anyone else right now. That is engaged. A person can be engaged to one other person, a phone line can be engaged with one other call, a toilet can be engaged by whoever is inside. In each case: already taken, try later.

可以想成：某個東西已經被許出去了——名花有主、有人佔著、正在使用中——所以現在給不了別人。engaged 就是這個狀態。一個人可以被許給另一個人（訂婚），一條電話線可以被另一通電話佔著（佔線），一間廁所可以被裡面的人佔著（使用中）。三種情況說的是同一件事：已經有人了，晚點再來。
