You can picture economic as 'to do with how money flows through a whole system' — trade, jobs, prices, and how a country handles its goods and services. From that big picture of money in motion comes a narrower, down-to-earth use: something that 'makes money sense' because it pays for itself.

From the word’s history

Economic goes back to Greek 'oikonomia', the managing of a household (oikos 'house' + nomos 'managing') — running a home's resources well. That root of 'managing resources sensibly' still sits under both the big 'national economy' sense and the small 'cost-effective' sense.

economic 上溯到希臘字 oikonomia，本指「管理一個家庭」（oikos 房子 + nomos 管理），也就是把家裡的資源打理好。這個「把資源管理得當」的字根，至今仍同時撐著「國家經濟」這個大義，和「划算、值得」這個小義。
