Picture two things whose edges have not blurred together: two lines you can still see the gap between, two sounds you can still tell apart. Distinctly is the adverb of that unblurred edge. Whatever it touches becomes something you can pick out and point at — the words in a sentence, the details in a memory, the chill in a room, the style of a dish.

Distinctly is distinct plus -ly, and distinct itself means kept apart from other things. The modern core is the same idea in adverb form: things you can tell apart.
