Picture a sugar cube dropped into hot water. For a moment it is still a cube — one solid thing with clear edges. Then the edges , the bonds holding it together let go, and it spreads out until you cannot point to it any more. It has not been destroyed; it has stopped holding together as one thing.

From Latin dissolvere "to loosen up, break apart" (dis- "apart" + solvere "to loosen, release"). The root idea is not "destroy" but "un-tie" — which is exactly why the same word covers sugar in water and a marriage in court.

拉丁文 dissolvere = dis-（分開）+ solvere（鬆開、解開），字面就是「把綁著的東西解開」。這解釋了一個乍看奇怪的現象：為什麼溶解和解散國會是同一個字。因為兩者都不是「打碎」，而是「解開那條把它綁成一體的繩子」。solve、absolve、solution 也都是這一家。
