When people convene, they come together, usually for a meeting that has a job to do — a committee, a court, a board, a conference. You can also convene a meeting: that means you call the people to come. It works both ways, and both are rather formal. Friends do not convene for coffee; a parliament convenes, a jury convenes, the chair convenes a meeting. In news and official writing you will see it a lot. In ordinary talk people say meet, get together, or hold a meeting. The feeling is: this gathering is planned, and it matters.
