If a person, a bar, a company, or a method is disreputable, people think it is shady: dishonest, low, perhaps against the rules. It is about bad name, not only bad manners. A disreputable neighbourhood in older writing often meant a place the “respectable” would not be seen; today the word still carries that of moral judgement, so it can sound a little old-fashioned or colourful. You can also say a disreputable-looking coat or grin — not criminal, just not quite proper. Formal-to-neutral; in talk, people often say shady or has a bad name instead.
