Think of a gap between here and there, and something that takes the thing across it so the thing does not have to get there by itself. A person can play that part, and so can a pipe, a radio, a word — or a moving belt. Conveyor names the part, not the thing being carried.

Wiktionary gives the make-up of the word as convey + -or: convey is to carry or pass something over to someone, and -or names the one who does it. The modern uses are all that one role, given to different things.
