You can picture something passing across the gap between people so that it becomes shared — an idea, a feeling, a message moving from one mind to another until both hold it. Every use of 'communication' is some version of this passing-across: the act itself, the channels that carry it, the skill of doing it well, or the message that gets sent.

Communication comes from Latin 'communicare' = 'to make common, share', from 'communis' (common, shared). So at root it means making something common between people — which is exactly the picture of an idea passing across until both sides share it.
