One picture holds this word together: colour going onto something. Think of a hand with a crayon, filling colour into the shapes of a drawing. From that one picture the word reaches in two directions. Looking back at the hand, you get the activity itself, the stuff in the bottle that the colour comes from, and the word you put in front of a noun to say 'this is the thing that gives the colour'. Looking forward at the finished picture, you get the colour that is simply there on a face, a bird or a leaf, as if nature had done the colouring already.
