Pigment is the natural stuff inside skin, hair, eyes, and plants that makes them a particular colour. in skin is a pigment; the green in a leaf is a pigment too. It is not the colour itself — it is the material that causes the colour. Artists use the same word for the coloured powder they mix into paint, which is a close stretch of the same idea: stuff that colours. The word is a little more school-and-science than everyday chat; in daily talk people often just say colour. It is not a dye you add from outside. Dye is what you put on; pigment is often already in the thing.
