You can think of carousel as one round floor that keeps turning, with things fixed on it, so that each thing comes past you in turn and then comes back again. Nothing is taken away and nothing is finished: the loop just keeps going. Sometimes you climb on and turn with it, as at the fair. Sometimes you stand still and let it bring your own thing to you, as at the airport. Sometimes only the front item is showing and the rest are waiting their turn, as on a screen.

Carousel came into English from French carrousel, from Italian carosello. The earlier sense was a tournament in which riders made formations on horseback, so the circling movement is old; the exact further origin is uncertain, and the source says so plainly.
carousel 是從法文 carrousel 進到英文的，再往前是義大利文 carosello。更早的意思是騎士在馬上繞圈、排隊形的競技表演，所以「繞圈」這件事在這個字裡很早就有了。至於再往前的來源，來源字典明說不確定，這裡也就不多推。
