You can picture a whole street handed over to celebration — music, costumes, dancing, a crowd moving together. A stretch of time is marked off from ordinary life and filled with noise, colour and shared pleasure. Every other use of the word borrows some part of that scene: the crowd, the games, the sheer colourful abundance.
